On the discussion boards we often speak about social change and what is or isn’t revolutionary. I’ve always felt that we can’t underestimate the revolutionary potential of art, the imagination, the body – what we do with the body and how we use the body.
Rize is one of the most mind/body boggling flicks you will ever see. I was in awe and agree with a friend who called the film “astonishing.” Rize depicts clown dancing in South Central, created by Tommy the Clown the same year of the LA riots, and krumping -- clown dancing's even more kinetic and expressive offspring.
We are talking highly skilled competive street dancing, that will absolutely be canonized as one of the genuine and great American art forms, like jazz, or yes, hip hop. Krumping is light years from break dancing.
Rize frames clowning and krumping as an alternative to gang-life. Having recently met a teenager from the neighborhood who was paralyzed by a random gunshot, I applaud any alternative. But I can imagine no alternative more fascinating and expressive than this one. There are also some small, but compelling, glimpses into the dancers’ lives and their families. Also: a huge stadium clown/krump dance competition. Man, I want to go to one of those!
When you watch the film, remember – the footage is not sped up!!!

At the start of the stunning, explosively moving new documentary Rize, a few lines of text appear onscreen. The raw film shot for this movie, we are informed, “has not been sped up in any way.” Soon, we see a bunch of young people dancing in controlled spasms, executing precise break-dancing moves with such speed and variety that you understand immediately why director David LaChapelle wanted to assure us that there was no camera trickery involved. We quickly acclimate ourselves: We’re in South Central Los Angeles, and the black youths are “krumping”—performing in an original style that combines old-school rap break dancing (including head- and hand-spinning), stiff robotic movements, and fluid chest and pelvic thrusts. Facial expressions are intense, almost deadpan; the movement itself is exhilarating, joyous. If that sounds like a contradictory collection of characteristics, well, you’ve got to see Rize, because it just gets more complicated and fascinating as it goes along.
One thing you notice right away is that many of these nonprofessional, mostly untrained dancers—street kids, most of them—are wearing aggressive slashes of bright color on their faces. And that’s where the story Rize has to tell really begins. About a decade ago, an adult named Thomas Johnson decided that having run-ins with the cops was a dead end, and he started doing something unusual: He became a clown, performing at children’s parties in full floppy-multicolored-wig-and-makeup regalia. To keep the attention of his hip-hop-raised little audiences and their parents, he started dancing in a crazy, humorous manner. Everyone finds exaggeration and absurd speed funny, so that’s what Tommy the Clown, as he is now known, made his distinctive style.
Everyone loved him and his antics—the parties spilled out into the street—and an odd thing happened: Teens and pre-teens, instead of finding Tommy’s antics foolish, began to imitate him, but on their own terms. Pretty soon, Tommy had enlisted a bunch of them in his own “Clown Academy,” instructing them on how to do parties themselves. He was growing the business, but he was also growing a subculture. The kids found “krumping” (I’d guess the derivation is some combination of clowning, crunk music, and jumping), with its competitive edge (dancers gather in a circle to watch a solo or pair of performers show off new moves), its money-making element, and its opportunity to band together out of kinship, to be a viable alternative to the gangs. And in South Central L.A., where gangs deal death, not mirth, this was a remarkable development. The star performers took on names like Tight Eyez and Miss Prissy and Swoop. Joining in became a third alternative, as the mother of one young krumper explains succinctly: “Bloods, Crips . . . no! Clowns!”
LaChapelle began documenting this scene three years ago. (An early version of Rize, a short film called Krumped, played the Sundance Film Festival in 2004.) A photographer and music-video director, LaChapelle has the good sense not to impose voice-over narration—he lets Tommy and the krumpers tell their own story.
Krumping is now a creative competitive sport; Rize climaxes with a sort of krump-off held in 2003 at the Great Western Forum sports arena, where the volume of cheers determines which clown-faced troupe wins. But the idea that krumping could sweep the nation isn’t the one that inspires Rize’s best moments. Rather, it’s the way the camera stays planted while a succession of krumpers, their faces adorned in fierce-looking primary colors—more war-paint than clown makeup—do jolting wriggles that leave their friends and competitors literally slack-jawed, then whooping and cheering. “Every day, the style changes,” someone remarks—which is one reason why, by the way, I don’t think krumping will be easily co-opted. Anything put in a commercial will be out of date two weeks later.
It’s the way one person describes krumping as “ghetto ballet” and another says the impetus to get through life in this neighborhood is “You redeem it through art.” It’s the way a krumper tells the camera with grim firmness, as he stands amid the urban ruins, “What we are, are oppressed.” Krumping, for all its surface silliness, fights oppression with a painted-on smiley-face that cannot disguise dead-serious determination.

Mixed Review From The Village Voice
Kiddie birthday entertainment seems like an unlikely origin for the roughest, toughest new urban dance phenomenon, but such is the genealogy offered in Rize, fashion photographer David LaChapelle's highly entertaining but underdeveloped documentary on clown dancing and krumping, two interrelated forms that emerged in the 'hoods of Los Angeles. The former began inauspiciously when a friend asked Tommy Johnson, the doc's default focal point, to don rainbow wig and face paint for a children's party in the days following the Rodney King riots. His energetic and personable "hip-hop dancing clown" antics proved popular enough that Johnson, working under the nom de buffoon Tommy the Clown, spawned an unexpected cultural trend, eventually taking on a generation of young protégés and inspiring the formation of other clown crews, which in recent years number over 20 and provide a creative community alternative to the lure of gangs, drugs, and crime.
From this intergenerational seedbed of clownage sprang krumping, an aggressively virtuosic form of dance battling that serves as the visual raison d' for LaChapelle's documentary. Gyrating and popping so rapidly that they seem like break-dancers on fast-forward (opening titles stress that no video has been sped up), krumpers face off with the belligerent bravado of backyard wrestlers, micro-syncopating every body movement in an ever morphing flurry of astonishing corporeal control. The signature move is a hyperactive booty shake that engages the entire torso as an expressive instrument; according to interviewees, it evolved from a more sexualized Caribbean-esque grind called "the stripper dance." Traditional clown makeup transformed into asymmetrical warrior face paint that's itself a minor art form, individually composed of blue flames, starburst streaks, and other abstract motifs, more reminiscent of Ziggy Stardust than Bozo.
Shot in a neo-vérité combination of generous performance footage and face-to-face interviews, Rize stays mostly bereft of the hyper-real hard-candy stylization LaChapelle pioneered in his print work and music videos, saving such high-gloss methods for a slow-motion coda. Although
Rize demonstrates the aesthetic power and socially uplifting effects of "krumpness," like many documentaries about performers, it's hampered by its subjects' skill at playing to the camera. Few of the interviews get much further than recording surface boasts and assertive self-definitions; LaChapelle connects all their stories with common threads of resisting gang culture, but at the expense of flattening out each person's character.
This propensity leads to a particularly unfortunate sequence. Attempting to provide deeper historical background, LaChapelle suddenly cuts to what appears to be tribesmen dancing, wrestling, and face painting. Inserted to follow a statement from one performer that his skills simply came naturally, the footage appears without context or explanation. One suspects LaChapelle meant to offer an illustration of krumping's ultimately African roots, but in fact the anonymous tribesmen's dancing looks very little like that of the SoCal teens. It's as if a Martha Graham documentary suddenly jumped to stock shots of traditional Irish jigging but left its argument at that. Far more remains unsaid about how krumping incorporates more historically recent gestures. Break dancing is given a brief nod, but even casual observers might recognize elements of electric boogaloo, capoeira, and ballet; one kid even high-steps a cakewalk.
While Rize includes evidence of controversy surrounding Tommy the Clown's status as the grandfather of krump, there may be more to the story. The website for a recently released DVD called Get Krump, made with many of the same dancers featured in Rize, warns that "many characters and clowns are trying to take the credit away from the true source and founders." Get Krump's producers explain that their documentary "is not a pity tale with the old song 'I dance because my alternatives are drugs and gang violence' but rather 'I dance because I am the best at it and you are invited to prove me wrong.' " Seems like the competition might not be over; Mr. LaChapelle, consider yourself served.
