Schreibs, your cinematic knowledge puts mine to shame. I have only seen a handful of these films (Welles, Hawks, Hitchcock). Which of the others would be most riveting on a stormy night? I'm guessing that eventually there will be one.

Hi all,
I too am a fan of Johns. I went to school with both of his daughters and remember fondly Ms. Rowlands bringing us McDonalds food on Friday afternoons.
His influence can be seen in the "Dogma" films of today and I encourage all of you to visit "Holdenautomotive.com" to see what has transpired in this genre. This is a friend of mine and the son of the well known actor. Although I am on the peripheral, the godfather of my son is a Producer in this field. The genre started n the Netherlands with, I beleive, 10 - 13 rules to shoot by. It seems worthwhile and has manifested some acclaim both here and abroad.

Hi fellow cineastes! I make no claim that my list is objective or definitive. How could it be? I do want to address a couple issues that have been raised.
Just as I don't understand how movie watchers can take sustenance from the work of Todd Solandz, I can't fathom why people think "American Beauty" is a great movie. As a general rule, movies that announce via bullhorn their artiness, are usually as far removed from art as Nick Cassavetes is from the genius of his father. (See a movie I wrote called "Body of Influence" and you'll watch a competition for incompetence between the director and the lead actor, Nick Cassavetes.) Any movie that wears its heart on its sleeve and politics on its lapel loses any power to eviscerate, to lacerate, to disturb, or simply to move and spiritualize.
For all the beauty of the cinematography and the great performance by Spacey, Mendes' movie is shallow and works by dint of gimmicks. Compassion is reserved for Spacey and the sensitive, troubled teenagers. Adults are corrupt, teens innocent and beautiful. This is a facile and shopworn notion--and one better, more powerfully expressed in many other movies. Blue Velvet comes readily to mind.
Beyond the simple-minded theme of associating corruption with the adult world and innocence with childhood, the movie substitues cliches and gimmicks for characterization. From the abusive, homophobic military man to Annette Bening's avaricious, grasping wife, to the trampy blond girl, to the sensitive teen, we are presented with one cliche' after another. Aware of this, the movie makers decide to give each stereotype a reversal as substitute for characterization. The military man is really a closeted homosexual; the tramp is a virgin and so on. If nothing is what it seems, then the movie is reduced to cheap carny tricks--and that quickly becomes tiresome. Sensitive teens, corrupt adults, the shrewish wife. This is conformity and prejudice masquerading as subversion. A great recipe for winning Oscars but not for inclusion in the pantheon of great movies.
Chaplin's genius was not as a director, but in his creation of the "Little Fella" character. In contrast, Buster Keaton's genius was as a director. I did include an Orson Welles movie, just not the obligatory one. Why would I select "The Magnificent Ambersons"?
One day I was reflecting on the movies I consider great, trying to ferret out whether or not they all had something in common other than the ability to affect me on a deep level. After years of toying with this question, I did find a thread. All the movies I selected, with the exception of the work of Cassavetes, seem to belong to an informal genre I call "The Cinema of Memory." The stories have a dual nature: they present events in all their vital immediacy, but also as they exist on the horizon of memory. The stories are tinged with the quality of mortality, that everything passses and what is important is how the events are remembered. It's the same quality that Proust achieved in his opus "Remembrance of Things Past." De Sica's "The Garden of the Finzi-Gondinis" also has this quality, as do The Godfathers and even Renoir's "Rules of the Game." Again, with the noteworthy exception of Cassavetes, these movies tend to insinuate themselves into the marrow of my bones and affect me much more deeply than most movies.

Godfather, you are truly a movie fiend! Too bad we are no longer doing our "Friday Matinee" at the 'tute. DPS, I, and several others each showed one or several movies a quarter followed by discussion. Each quarter had a different theme. We could have coaxed you to join us for some 3D movie chat or even compelled you to be a guest host! Well, maybe one day I or someone else will bring it back. (Hint, hint to Charlie should he ever read this!)

It is crucial that people are exposed to such gifts, and I don't know how else they will find them, if people like yourself and DPS don't expose them to it and provide them the tools they need to appreciate it. It could be a failure of biology on my part. I actually felt the same way with #6 on my list, "Time Out," but included it because the idea is so strong. As mentioned, the only consistent person is a corpse. =:^o)
