I never wrote about it, because there was so much I wanted to say... So we will settle for this.

This gorgeous, horrific, tragic, ironic, funny, humbling, traumatizing movie is yet another reminder that war is so absurdly fucking futile. Why, oh why, don't our stupid animal brains get it?

It was beautifully filmed; looked like a Kurosawa. The characters were interesting, contradictory, complex. It depicted history while challenging stereotypes.

Clint Eastwood makes me feel good about turning 40. I mean this dude is in his 70s and he just keeps getting better. (Although Flags isn't close to this league, it was still ambitious.)

I loved The Departed (the symmetry, poetry, the structure, and, yes, the acting!), but please see Iwo Jima. I found Eastwood's film the most riveting movie of the year... and then some.
