Until the last frames, I didn't know how this film would end. While watching I felt like it could descend into a very grim film. It didn't, although throughout it is sinister, riveting, atmospheric, beautifully photographed, and ultimately moving. I left feeling proud of the two young main characeters. Many reviews I read described the film as being about a loss of innocence. I thought it was about finding a moral conscience despite the odds. Best film I've seen in a very long time.
Here's a review that I found that doesn't say too much or too little:
'I'm Not Scared' an unsettling, evocative thriller

The declaration "I'm not scared" is a blustery anthem of childhood. And the hauntingly beautiful Italian film with that title approaches the world through the lens of a child, powerfully and palpably capturing the isolation, confusion and unnameable fears of childhood.
Giuseppe Cristiano gives an Academy Award-worthy performance in I'm Not Scared.

A sense of dread infuses I'm Not Scared from its earliest frames, despite stunning vistas of windswept golden fields and endless sky that dominate the visual landscape. The cinematography is reminiscent of Terence Malick's Days of Heaven.
The emotional landscape is far murkier and disquieting. Ten-year-old Michele (played by the wonderfully natural young actor Giuseppe Cristiano) is growing up in poverty in a remote part of southern Italy. Michele is a sweet kid who stays up late telling his little sister scary stories, spends hours riding across rolling hills on his rickety bicycle, and sticks up for a neighbor girl being bullied by one of the local kids.
Michele discovers a dark, dank bunker in an abandoned farmhouse that frightens him beyond imagination. The symbolism is clear: Underneath the peaceful, sunny exterior of this rural life lurks something sinister.
A golden-haired boy is being held captive in the cellar, and Michele's innate decency leads him to try to help the boy despite major odds. But Michele learns the disturbing lesson that those he trusts most may be ineffectual or even nefarious. The evolving friendship between the two boys is heart-tugging, but a sense of tragic futility underlies the action.
I'm Not Scared, based on a best-selling Italian novel by Niccolo Ammaniti, is worth seeing not only because it's a highly effective thriller, but also because it's a finely tuned evocation of innocence at the mercy of adult cynicism.
