How to Run a Discussion on the Literature:

1) Read thoroughly, underlining etc. Give yourselves a few days to contemplate the themes etc.

2) Develop a lesson plan by creating approximately ten questions distributed among (significant, relevant, and interesting) literal, inferential, critical and creative questions.

3) Create a handout, overhead via the PC, or write these on the board at break.

4) Consider finding other resources or materials to enhance the discussion. These should grow organically from questions and thoughts you find yourself experiencing while contemplating the text.

5) Decide if you want us to sit in a circle, do small group discussions (followed by whole class), or if you want to take a completely different approach.

6) Emphasize an interact lesson plan that makes your peers responsible for their reading, but also helps us understand and make the reading interesting.

Please who receive an “A” for this assignment will:
• Make a genuine effort to connect emotionally to the reading, or intellectually engage it.
• Demonstrate critical thinking through focus and fluidity of lesson plan, preparedness, and serious consideration of text.
• Develop questions that consider specifics of plot, theme, character, symbolism, significant moments, historical and cultural context.
• Develop activities and/or questions that actively encourage interaction and critical thinking.
• Use different question types (literal, inferential, critical, creative).
• Use handouts, supplemental materials, or others means for us to experience the reading in a new way.

What to avoid:
• Summarizing the plot
• Reading from the internet
• Developing vague questions
• Winging it at the last minute
• Being resistant to the text

If you are having problems, write juliethebolt@aol.com or come to my tutoring hours or ask another English tutor to help you.
