Teaching the Class

Students in American Indian Literature will either “teach the class” on a writer, historical event or topic, or cultural figure OR do a “creative interpretation” of the literature. These will be assigned over the first two weeks of class to correlate with specific readings and topics.

"Teachers" will research a topic, facilitate discussion, and create multi-sensory learning activities. The objective should be interactive critical and creative thinking about the given subject.

Overview of the process:

1. In-depth research. The internet can be very limiting and I encourage you to go to the public library which tends to offer more in-depth reading and resources. However, if you use the internet use multiple sources that represent different points of view. Locate on-line journals and do advanced searches.

Important note: Reading directly from internet printouts, other than quotes which we will discuss, is strictly forbidden. If this is the bulk of your teaching, you will be asked to sit down.

2. Locate themes, issues and questions. You will determine what is most important to convey and why. Do not be overly general and do not focus on factoids.

3. Plan for approximately 15 minutes.

4. Find creative ways to "teach" your topic. Use several of the below:

a. Questions (everyone is required to prepared thought-provoking questions.)
b. Short in-class readings
c. Visuals
d. Small and large group discussions
e. Turn mini-lectures into mini-plays
f. Handouts followed by an activity or questions
g. Video followed by an activity or questions
h. Audio followed by an activity or questions
i. Power-point, posters or other visuals
j. Creative exercises of your own device
.

5. If you need technology other than a VCR or PC cart, write juliethebolt@aol a week beforehand, or request it yourself from the video cage.

6. Use your individual strengths. Draw on what you care about. Take risks.

Good luck, Pedagogues!!!!
