Each of you will run a discussion on a story, chapter of the novel, or essay. Here are the basic types you will need to develop about our reading. (These should also help with the assignment of "teaching the class" on an author, topic, or cultural figure.) Literal: Questions with a concrete, non-debatable answer. These question types serve the purpose of clarification and comprehension. Inferential: Questions that ask us to "read between the lines." Often these are "why" questions and are open-ended. They ask us to think critically about symbolism, character development, motivation etc. Critical: Critical questions call for analysis and proof. Often they ask us to compare and contrast, developing a thesis or point of view about a theme within the reading. In other words, these questions ask readers to perform a specific analytical task and back up their position. Creative: Questions that ask us to relate our own selves to a specific situation in the novel, or place a character or theme in another context, or use our imaginations to think beyond the borders of the text. (For example, what happens to a specific character after the novel concludes and why.)
